Can a portable power station run a space heater?

Yes, if the station's rated AC output is at least the heater's wattage, but not for long. Most plug-in heaters draw 1,500 W on high and about 750 W on low, so a 1,000 Wh class station runs one for about 35 to 40 minutes on high, or about 1.1 to 1.3 hours on low.

The math is runtime = Wh x efficiency / heater W. For an EcoFlow DELTA 3 Plus: 1,024 Wh x 0.85 / 1,500 W = 0.58 hours, about 35 minutes.

How much power does a space heater use?

About 1,500 W on high and 750 W on low for most portable electric heaters. Vornado lists 1,500 W on high and 750 W on low for its heaters [21], a Lasko ceramic heater is rated at 1,500 W [22], and Virginia Cooperative Extension gives 750 to 1,500 W as the nameplate range for portable heaters [23].

A heater holds that draw for as long as the element is on, which makes it one of the hardest loads in our data for a battery. See the space heater page for every source.

How long will a power station run a space heater?

Between about 35 minutes and 2.8 hours on high, depending on the battery. Our data has 31 stations rated for at least 1,500 W. This table shows 11 of them, from the 1,000 Wh class up to the largest, with the runtime worked out at 1,500 W (high) and 750 W (low):

Station Battery Rated AC output High, 1,500 W Low, 750 W
EcoFlow DELTA 3 Plus 1,024 Wh 1,800 W [3] 35 min 1.1 h
Anker SOLIX C1000 Gen 2 1,024 Wh 2,000 W [4] 35 min 1.1 h
Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 1,070 Wh 1,500 W [7] 36 min 1.2 h
BLUETTI AC180 1,152 Wh 1,800 W [1] 39 min 1.3 h
Jackery Explorer 1000 Plus 1,264 Wh 2,000 W [8] 43 min 1.4 h
Jackery Explorer 2000 v2 2,042 Wh 2,200 W [9] 1.1 h 2.3 h
EcoFlow DELTA 3 Max 2,048 Wh 2,400 W [10] 1.1 h 2.3 h
Anker SOLIX F3800 3,840 Wh 6,000 W [11] 2.1 h 4.3 h
BLUETTI Elite 400 3,840 Wh 2,600 W [13] 2.3 h 4.7 h
EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3 4,096 Wh 4,000 W [14] 2.3 h 4.6 h
Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus 5,040 Wh 7,200 W [15] 2.8 h 5.7 h

Most of these use our default 0.85 efficiency, because the makers don't publish one. Two use the maker's figure: the BLUETTI AC180 manual says over 85% [2], so we use 0.85, and the Elite 400 manual says over 92% [13], so we use 0.92, which is why the Elite 400 runs a little longer than the Anker F3800 with the same battery. Times under an hour are rounded to the minute and longer ones rounded down, like the calculator. (How we got these numbers.)

These are worst-case times. A heater with a thermostat switches its element off once the room warms up, so over an hour it may average less than its rated watts. None of our sources publish how much less, because it depends on the room, the weather and the setting. If you measure your heater with a plug-in watt meter, enter the average in the calculator's Average W field.

What size power station do I need for a space heater?

You need a rated AC output of at least 1,500 W to run a typical heater on high, or at least 750 W for low only. Then size the battery by hours: Wh needed = heater W x hours / 0.85.

  • One hour on high: 1,500 x 1 / 0.85 = about 1,765 Wh.
  • Three hours on low: 750 x 3 / 0.85 = about 2,647 Wh.
  • A full eight-hour night on low: 750 x 8 / 0.85 = about 7,059 Wh.

The largest station in our data, the Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus, holds 5,040 Wh [15]. A full night of electric heat is beyond any single station here unless you add expansion batteries.

Can a Jackery run a space heater?

Yes, every Jackery in our data rated for 1,500 W or more can. The Explorer 1000 v2 is rated for exactly 1,500 W [7], so a 1,500 W heater sits right at its limit and runs about 36 minutes (1,070 x 0.85 / 1,500 = 0.61 hours). The Explorer 1000 Plus (2,000 W) runs it about 43 minutes, the Explorer 2000 v2 about 1.1 hours and the Explorer 5000 Plus about 2.8 hours. Using the heater's low setting roughly doubles each time.

Does a space heater need surge capacity?

No. A space heater is a resistive load: current runs through a heating element and turns into heat, with no motor to start. It draws about its rated watts from the moment it switches on, so the limit is the station's rated continuous output, not its surge rating. A fridge or sump pump is different; see how the estimates work for the surge check.

Can a small power station run a heater in boost mode?

Some can, at reduced heat. Several stations rated under 1,500 W have a boost mode that lowers the voltage so a heating load runs at lower power:

  • EcoFlow says X-Boost on the RIVER 3 Plus (600 W rated, 286 Wh) runs heating devices up to 1,200 W [16].
  • BLUETTI says Power Lifting Mode on the Elite 30 V2 (600 W rated, 288 Wh) runs pure resistive loads up to 1,500 W [18].
  • DJI says the Power 1000 Mini (800 W rated) can power select 1,200 W appliances [20].

In boost mode the heater gives off less heat than it would on a wall outlet. We list boost modes but don't count them when we say whether a station runs a load. With batteries of 286 and 288 Wh, the RIVER 3 Plus and Elite 30 V2 would drain in well under half an hour even at 750 W (286 x 0.85 / 750 = 0.32 hours, about 19 minutes).

Can solar power keep a space heater running?

Not in practice. To break even, the panels would have to deliver as much power as the heater draws: 1,500 W on high, around the clock. Many stations can't even accept that much solar input. The DELTA 3 Plus tops out at 1,000 W of solar input [3] and the Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 at 400 W [7], and panels rarely deliver their full rating all day.

Is there a better way to use a power station for heat?

Use the low setting, heat one small closed room, and save the battery for loads that need less. A full-size fridge averages about 52 W over a day [26], so the energy a 1,500 W heater uses in one hour would keep that fridge going for more than a day. Compare stations side by side on the stations page or put your own heater's watts in the calculator.

Quick answers

Can a portable power station run a space heater?

Yes, if its rated AC output is at least the heater's wattage, usually 1,500 W on high or about 750 W on low. Battery life is short. A 1,024 Wh station runs a 1,500 W heater about 35 minutes (1,024 x 0.85 / 1,500).

How long will a 1,000 Wh power station run a space heater?

About 35 to 40 minutes on high (1,500 W) and about 1.1 to 1.3 hours on low (750 W) for stations from 1,024 to 1,152 Wh, using runtime = Wh x 0.85 / heater watts.

Can a Jackery run a space heater?

The Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 is rated for 1,500 W, so it can run a 1,500 W heater, for about 36 minutes. The Explorer 2000 v2 runs it about 1.1 hours and the Explorer 5000 Plus about 2.8 hours.

Do space heaters have a starting surge?

No. A space heater is a resistive load with no motor to start, so it draws about its rated watts from the moment it switches on. The limit is the station's rated continuous output, not its surge rating.

What size power station do I need to run a space heater all night?

Eight hours on a 750 W low setting needs about 7,059 Wh of battery (750 x 8 / 0.85), more than any single station in our data holds without add-on batteries. The largest, the Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus at 5,040 Wh, runs a 750 W heater about 5.7 hours.

Pick your power station and what you want to run. We'll tell you how long it lasts.

About 39 minutes

That is how long a fully charged BLUETTI AC180 runs the space heater.

1,152 Wh x 0.85 / 1,500 W = 0.65 hours

Output is fine: it draws 1,500 W, under the station's 1,800 W.
