Can a portable power station or solar generator run a house?
Not a whole house for long. The average US home used 10,791 kWh of electricity in 2022, about 29.6 kWh a day, and the biggest portable station in our data holds 5040 Wh, enough for about 3.5 hours of that average use. What a power station does well is keep the essentials running: a 2,000 Wh station covers a fridge, a few lights and phone charging for about a day.
How much electricity does a house use?
About 29.6 kWh a day, or an average draw of about 1232 W around the clock. That comes from the U.S. Energy Information Administration: the average residential customer bought 10,791 kWh in 2022, about 899 kWh a month. Dividing by 365 gives 29.6 kWh a day; dividing by 8,760 hours gives 1232 W.
Your house may use much more or less. Electric heat, central air, an electric water heater and an electric range push it up; gas appliances bring it down. Your utility bill shows your own monthly kWh.
How long would a power station run an average house?
A few hours on the largest base units, using the same formula as everywhere on this site:
Runtime (hours) = battery Wh x inverter efficiency / load W.
- Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus (5040 Wh): 5040 x 0.85 = 4284 Wh at the outlet, and 4284 / 1232 = about 3.5 hours.
- Anker SOLIX F3800 (3840 Wh): 3840 x 0.85 = 3264 Wh, about 2.6 hours.
- EcoFlow DELTA 3 Plus (1024 Wh): 1024 x 0.85 = 870 Wh, about 42 minutes.
Neither maker publishes an inverter efficiency for these, so we use 0.85. With add-on batteries the numbers grow: the 5000 Plus expands to 30000 Wh (about 20.7 hours at the average draw) and the F3800 to 26880 Wh (about 18.5 hours). Even fully expanded, neither covers a full average day on one charge.
What can a power station run in an outage?
The essentials, for a day or more. Our 24-hour fridge outage page adds up a typical essentials day:
| Load | Watts | Hours | Energy (Wh) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-size fridge (average draw) | 52 | 24 | 1248 |
| Three LED bulbs | 8.8 each | 6 | 158 |
| Phone charger | 20 | 3 | 60 |
| Total | 1466 |
The fridge's 52 W is the median full-size ENERGY STAR model's 457 kWh a year divided by 8,760 hours. To cover 1466 Wh you need 1466 / 0.85 = about 1,725 Wh of battery. A 2048 Wh station like the Anker SOLIX C2000 Gen 2 has 1741 Wh at the outlet, just enough for a day; a 1024 Wh station like the EcoFlow DELTA 3 Plus lasts about 14 hours on the same loads (870 / 61 W average).
Can a power station run a furnace, well pump or sump pump?
Yes, if it is big enough for the motors. These loads are where most of the sizing difficulty is:
- Furnace blower: 600 to 875 W running, 1000 to 3175 W to start.
- Well pump: 250 to 1100 W running, 2100 to 3100 W to start.
- Sump pump: 800 to 1200 W running, 1300 to 3200 W to start.
- Fridge: 700 to 725 W while the compressor runs, 2200 to 2900 W to start.
All four at their high running figures add up to 3900 W. If one motor starts while the rest run, the peak is 3900 W plus the largest jump from running to starting, the furnace blower's 2300 W, for about 6200 W. Among the stations here, the Anker SOLIX F3800 (6000 W rated, 9000 W surge), the EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3 (4000 W, 8000 W) and the Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus (7200 W, 14400 W) clear both limits. The Anker SOLIX F3000 (3600 W rated) does not cover 3900 W of running load.
These motors cycle, so they do not run all day, but each start still has to fit under the surge rating. Our sump pump article works through storm runtimes in detail.
What can't a power station run for long?
Anything that makes heat or cold from electricity. A 1500 W space heater empties the 5000 Plus in about 2.9 hours (4284 / 1500). Air conditioners are the same story; see can a power station run an air conditioner. Central air, electric water heaters, electric dryers and ranges are beyond what we can size from our data. Check their nameplates before planning on them.
How do you connect a power station to a house?
Plug appliances straight into the station, or have a licensed electrician install a transfer switch or the maker's home backup kit so the station feeds chosen circuits. Never plug a station into a wall outlet to back-feed the house; it is dangerous to you and to line workers.
Does solar make it a whole-house system?
Solar extends a station; it rarely replaces grid power for a whole home. A station can only take in its rated solar input, for example 400 W on the Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 or 2400 W on the Anker SOLIX F3800, and panels make less than their rating most of the day. Quick answers
Can a solar generator power a whole house?
Not for long. The average US home used 10,791 kWh in 2022, about 29.6 kWh a day. The largest base unit in our data, the Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus at 5040 Wh, covers about 3.5 hours of that average use.
What size solar generator do I need to run a house?
For essentials, about 2,000 Wh covers a full-size fridge, three LED bulbs and a phone for a day (1466 Wh). For average whole-home use you would need about 34,800 Wh of battery a day (29.6 kWh / 0.85), more than any expandable station here reaches.
How long will a 5000 Wh power station run a house?
About 3.5 hours at the US average draw of about 1232 W. With the 5000 Plus expanded to 30000 Wh, about 20.7 hours.
Can a portable power station run a furnace, well pump and fridge at once?
Only a large one. Together they draw up to 3900 W running, with a start-up peak of about 6200 W if one motor starts while the rest run. The Anker SOLIX F3800, EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3 and Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus clear both limits.
